ADS-B: Everything You Need to Know

Written by Hillsboro Aviation | Jul 29, 2019 9:20:51 PM

Confused? We know. ADS-B can be complicated. But it doesn't need to be. That's where we come in.

Where It All Started

NextGen is the FAA-led modernization of our nation's air transportation system. Its goal is to increase safety, efficiency, capacity, predictability, and resiliency of American aviation. A primary component of NextGen, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) provides the FAA with precise satellite-enable surveillance and gives pilots the ability to receive real-time traffic, graphical weather, and additional aeronautical information.

The FAA has switched to a satellite-enabled navigation system that is more precise than traditional ground-based navigation aids, reducing flying time, fuel use, and aircraft exhaust emissions.

What is ADS-B?

ADS-B is an environmentally friendly technology that enhances safety and efficiency, moving from ground radar and navigational aids to precise tracking using satellite signals.

With ADS-B, pilots see, for the first time, what controllers see: displays showing other aircraft in the sky. Cockpit displays also pinpoint hazardous weather and terrain, and give pilots important flight information. ADS-B reduces the risk of runway incursions, provides greater surveillance coverage, and reduces fuel burn and emissions by allowing for more direct routes. The improved accuracy, integrity, and reliability of satellite signals over radar means that controllers and pilots (equipped with ADS-B In) are able to safely reduce the minimum separation distance between aircraft.

How it Works

ADS-B consists of two systems: ADS-B Out and ADS-B In. ADS-B Out broadcasts an aircraft’s location, airspeed, and other data to ground stations, which then transmit the data to air traffic control (ATC) displays and to nearby aircraft equipped to receive the data via ADS-B In.

The Deadline

All aircraft owners and operators flying in controlled airspaces will be required to install ADS-B-Out by January 1, 2020.

I experienced more care and
personal attention as time
progressed...This is not typical
business practice in our culture,
and a true breath of fresh air."
